Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC members can plug into ‘green power’

Electric cooperative consumers in central and southern Indiana now have the power to help the environment – in more ways than one.

Enviro-Watts, energy produced from renewable resources in environmentally friendly methods, is now being offered by Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC and other participating electric cooperatives across Indiana.

“We have worked with our power supplier Hoosier Energy to provide a renewable energy option for our electric cooperative consumers,” says Roger D. Davis, general manager of Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC. Hoosier Energy is the power supply cooperative that generates and transmits electricity to the REMC and 15 other cooperatives in central and southern Indiana.

Davis explained that Enviro-Watts is Indiana’s electric cooperatives trademarked name for “green power” – energy generated from renewable resources as biomass, sun, wind and water. Currently the program’s energy is produced in central Indiana.

Enviro-Watts program electricity is available in 100 kilowatt hour blocks and is priced pennies per kilowatt-hour higher than from traditional sources to cover increased purchased power and other costs.

Portions of margins from the program will be used to support local or regional environmental efforts. “This initiative creates a partnership with our consumer that will benefit the local environment,” said Davis.

The Enviro-Watts program is the latest in a series of environmental initiatives from the REMC and Hoosier Energy. The Environmental Education Center at Turtle Creek and a multi-media lending library of environmental and energy education software and videotapes for teachers has been developed in recent years.

Consumers interested in participating in the Enviro-Watts program should contact their local electric cooperative.

Part of the Touchstone Energy alliance, Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC and Hoosier Energy’s 15 other member systems provide electricity to over half a million consumers in central and southern Indiana.
